When evaluating a new or used Cat machine, the purchase price is often the most visible number. However, for contractors and fleet managers in Minnesota and Iowa, the true cost — and true value — of equipment goes far beyond the initial invoice. Understanding true ROI (Return on Investment) requires looking at the full picture: how the machine performs over its entire life, how much it actually costs to own and operate, and how effectively it contributes to your bottom line.

At Ziegler CAT, we help customers move from “purchase price thinking” to Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and ROI-focused decision making. Here’s how to do it effectively in 2026.

What Is Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)?

TCO represents the complete financial impact of owning a piece of equipment from acquisition to disposal. A common formula used across the industry is:

TCO = Purchase Price + Operating Costs (fuel, operator labor, etc.) + Maintenance & Repair Costs – Resale/Residual Value

When you divide that total by the machine’s lifetime operating hours, you get a much more accurate cost per hour — the number that truly matters on a jobsite.

For example, a machine with a lower upfront price but high fuel consumption, frequent repairs, and poor resale value can end up costing significantly more per hour than a well-supported Cat machine.

Key Metrics That Reveal True ROI

  1. Utilization Rates
How many hours is the machine actually working versus idling? VisionLink™ data often shows many fleets running machines at only 50–70% utilization. Improving this by even 10–15% through better scheduling or operator coaching can dramatically boost ROI without buying new equipment.
  2. Downtime and Uptime
Unplanned downtime in construction can easily cost $500–$1,000+ per hour when you factor in lost productivity, idle labor, and project delays. The Ziegler CAT Uptime Commitment — backed by Customer Value Agreements (CVAs), nightly parts shuttles, and 24/7 support — directly protects your ROI by minimizing these expensive surprises.
  3. Fuel Efficiency and Operating Costs
Telematics tools like VisionLink track fuel burn, idle time, and efficiency in real time. Small improvements in operator technique or machine settings can save thousands of gallons of fuel per year across a fleet.
  4. Maintenance Predictability
Using Cat S·O·S fluid analysis and condition monitoring allows you to shift from reactive repairs to planned maintenance, which is almost always less expensive and less disruptive.
  5. Resale Value
Well-maintained Cat machines with complete service records and genuine parts typically hold their value better. This directly improves your overall ROI when it’s time to trade or sell.

How VisionLink Turns Data Into ROI

Cat’s VisionLink platform (included on most new machines) gives you the visibility needed to calculate and improve these metrics. You can track:

  • Exact utilization and idle percentages
  • Fuel consumption trends
  • Machine health alerts
  • Productivity data (with VisionLink Productivity add-on)

Fleets using these insights consistently report measurable gains: reduced idle time, lower fuel costs, and higher overall equipment effectiveness.

Practical Steps to Measure ROI on Your Fleet

  • Gather baseline data — Pull reports from VisionLink or your current telematics system for the past 12 months.
  • Calculate TCO per machine — Use the formula above and include your actual maintenance records, fuel logs, and downtime events.
  • Benchmark against targets — Aim for high utilization (target 70%+ for most applications), low idle time (<30%), and predictable maintenance costs.
  • Factor in support partnerships — A strong dealer relationship like Ziegler Cat’s Uptime Commitment can significantly lower your TCO through faster parts access, expert service, and financing options.

Many of our customers discover that investing a bit more upfront in a Cat machine with full Ziegler support delivers a substantially better ROI over 5–10 years compared to lower-cost alternatives.

Safety Update: Heavy Parts Now Picked Up at Your Branch

Starting February 1, 2026, we are making a simple but important change to how we deliver heavy parts, and it is all about keeping people safe.

Right now, some larger items get dropped off at customer drop boxes. While that is convenient, anything over 50 lbs. can be tough and sometimes risky to lift without the right tools. To avoid injuries and make sure these heavier items are handled properly, we are updating our policy.

Beginning February 1, parts that weigh more than 50 lbs. will no longer be delivered to drop boxes. Instead, you will pick them up at your nearest Ziegler branch. It is a quick stop, and our teams will have the equipment needed to move heavier items safely. There are a handful of drop box locations that already have proper lifting tools. Those spots will remain exceptions, and your parts team can let you know if your usual drop box is one of them.

As we roll out this update, we appreciate your understanding and partnership. While it may alter how a portion of deliveries are handled, the result is a safer, more reliable process that keeps people protected and heavy parts handled the right way.

If you have questions or need assistance with pickup, please contact your local Ziegler branch. Thank you for working with us as we take another step toward improving safety and service for all.

When it comes to heavy equipment, the smallest details can make the biggest difference. That’s why Ziegler’s SOS Services Fluid Lab exists: to help customers prevent costly breakdowns and keep machines running at their best.

Every day, the lab processes 700 to 1,000 samples of oil, coolant and diesel fuel from customers across Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and beyond. The goal is speed and accuracy: Most samples are completed the same day, and most customers have results within 24 hours. That quick turnaround helps businesses make informed decisions before problems escalate.

Sending in a sample is a proactive step toward protecting your investment. Fluid analysis monitors equipment health, identifies contamination and detects early signs of wear. By catching issues before they become major failures, customers can schedule maintenance strategically and avoid unplanned downtime. The result is lower operating costs and longer equipment life.

The process begins as soon as a sample arrives. It’s labeled, registered and assigned an ID before moving through a series of tests. Technicians shake and dilute the oil, then run it through advanced instruments. One standout tool, the ICP (inductively coupled plasma), operates at an incredible 5,000 to 6,000 degrees Celsius—about the temperature of the sun’s surface—to measure trace elements of metals like iron, copper and silicon. These readings help reveal whether internal components are wearing down.

The lab also analyzes filters and coolants. Filters are cut open and examined under a microscope to identify debris, which can indicate dirt ingress or component wear. Coolant samples are tested for corrosion and contamination, ensuring the entire system stays healthy.

Over the past two decades, the lab has evolved from manual testing to automated systems, improving accuracy and reducing repetitive strain for technicians. Customers can now preregister samples using QR codes and apps like Cat Inspect, speeding up data entry and eliminating paperwork. In a commitment to sustainability, the lab recycles solvents used in testing, cutting waste and saving costs.

Fluid analysis may seem small, but its impact is huge. By trending data over time, Ziegler helps customers prevent breakdowns, reduce costs and keep equipment running longer. It’s all part of our mission to maximize uptime and deliver value where it matters most.

Want to learn more or start sampling? Purchase kits here or contact your local Ziegler branch today and discover how proactive maintenance can pay off.

Maximize Your Tax Savings in 2025 with Section 179: A Smart Move for Construction Equipment Buyers

As a trusted heavy equipment dealer, we know that purchasing machinery is a major investment for construction businesses. That’s why we’re excited to share how Section 179 of the IRS tax code can help you save big on your 2025 taxes when you buy or finance qualifying equipment.

What Is Section 179?

Section 179 allows businesses to deduct the full purchase price of qualifying equipment—like excavators, loaders, and work trucks—during the same tax year the equipment is put into service. Instead of spreading depreciation over several years, you get the full deduction up front, which can significantly reduce your taxable income.

2025 Limits: Bigger Deductions Than Ever

For 2025, the Section 179 deduction limit has increased to $2.5 million, with a phase-out beginning at $4 million in total equipment purchases. That means you can deduct up to $2.5 million in qualifying purchases, and still benefit from bonus depreciation if you exceed that amount.

Bonus depreciation is also back at 100%, which means even if your purchases go beyond the Section 179 cap, you can still deduct the full cost of additional equipment. This applies to both new and used equipment, giving you more flexibility in your buying decisions.

What Kind of Equipment Qualifies?

Most of the equipment we sell qualifies for Section 179, including:

  • Earthmoving machines like bulldozers, graders, and excavators
  • Skid steers, compact track loaders, and backhoes
  • Work trucks and vehicles over 6,000 lbs GVWR
  • Generators, compressors, and other jobsite essentials
  • Office equipment and software used in your business

As long as the equipment is used more than 50% for business purposes and is placed into service by December 31, 2025, it qualifies.

How This Helps Your Bottom Line

Let’s say you purchase a $150,000 loader this year. With Section 179, you can deduct the full $150,000 from your taxable income. If your business is in a 30% tax bracket, that’s a $45,000 tax savings—money you can reinvest into your operations, workforce, or additional equipment.

This kind of upfront savings can make a huge difference, especially for growing companies looking to expand their fleet or upgrade older machines.

Financing Still Qualifies

One of the best parts? You don’t have to pay cash to benefit. Equipment financed through loans or leases still qualifies for Section 179, as long as the equipment is placed into service before the end of the year. That means you can start using your new machine right away and still claim the full deduction—even if you’re making payments over time.

Don’t Miss the Deadline

To take advantage of Section 179 for the 2025 tax year, your equipment must be purchased or financed and in use by December 31, 2025. We recommend planning ahead and working with your accountant to make sure your purchases align with your tax strategy.

Let’s Talk Strategy

If you’re considering adding to your fleet this year, now is the time to act. Our team is here to help you find the right equipment and guide you through the financing process. We’ll make sure you get the most value—not just from your machine, but from the tax benefits that come with it.

Reach out today to explore your options and make the most of Section 179 before the year ends.

Revolutionizing Paving: The New Cat® SDX Screed Plates

In the world of asphalt paving, precision and efficiency are everything. That’s why Caterpillar has introduced the Cat® SDX Screed Plate System—a game-changing innovation designed to deliver smoother surfaces, higher density, and faster service. Whether you’re paving highways, interstates, or commercial lots, the SDX system is engineered to elevate your results and reduce downtime.

What Makes SDX Screed Plates Different?

Traditional screed plates have long relied on flat surfaces to shape and smooth asphalt. The SDX system breaks that mold with a three-dimensional angular design that creates a kneading action as asphalt passes through diamond-shaped grooves. This mixing motion increases in-place density and reduces air voids, resulting in a more uniform and durable surface.

At the rear of the plate, a tapering flat surface finishes the mat with smoothness that rivals traditional designs—only now with the added benefit of enhanced compaction and edge integrity.

Performance That Pays Off

Contractors using SDX plates have reported up to 91% density directly behind the screed, reducing the need for multiple roller passes. In some cases, crews have been able to eliminate a compactor altogether, saving time and operating costs without sacrificing quality.

The system also improves joint matching and edge stiffness, which contributes to better International Roughness Index (IRI) scores and longer-lasting roads. For paving professionals, that means more consistent results—and more opportunities to earn performance bonuses.

Built for Efficiency and Longevity

The SDX Screed Plates are constructed from cast chromium-alloy, offering up to three times the wear life of conventional plates. Their modular design allows for quick-change capability, with hardware-free installation that can be completed in as little as four hours. That means less downtime and more productivity on the job site.

Each plate section is interchangeable across the screed width, promoting even wear and simplifying maintenance. The system also includes a one-time adapter plate installation that integrates seamlessly with existing SE60 V and SE60 V XW screeds.

Ziegler’s Exclusive Offer

To help customers upgrade, Ziegler CAT is offering a limited-time promotion at our Monticello branch:

  • Free adapter kit
  • Discounted screed plates
  • 10% off installation

This offer runs through December 31, 2025, and is a great opportunity to boost your paving performance while saving on costs. Contact Blake Aldrich (612-201-7133) or Eric Ruzicka (763-358-4065) to schedule your upgrade.

Gilberto Andrade didn’t plan on becoming a business owner. Like many entrepreneurs, his journey started with side gigs, long hours, and a growing passion for landscaping. “I’ve been doing landscaping for about 12 years,” Andrade shared. “Bluestone officially became a business five years ago, but I was doing jobs long before that. It’s always been something I loved.”

Today, Bluestone Landscape and Design is based in Minnesota and specializes in hardscape projects—think patios, retaining walls, and custom outdoor spaces. While the company also handles general landscaping, Andrade says patio design is where his creativity really comes to life. “We do all kinds of landscaping,” he said. “But I really love designing patios. When we get the chance to do something cool, that’s what I get excited about.”

The business has grown steadily over the years, thanks to Andrade’s commitment to quality and customer service. “I just try to give my clients 110%,” he said. “Keep growing, keep delivering and always keep my word. That’s what matters most to me.”

Recently, Andrade got an unexpected boost when he won the Ziegler Tow and Go Sweepstakes. The prize included a Towmaster T-12D trailer and a 500-hour rental of a 250 skid steer—equipment that will help Bluestone take on larger projects more efficiently. “I totally forgot I even signed up,” he said with a laugh. “Dustin from Ziegler had been trying to reach me, and when he finally said I won, I thought he’d been hacked.”

Up until now, Andrade has relied on a compact dingo for most of his jobs. Having access to his own larger equipment, he said, will be a game-changer. “I’ve had access to bigger skids, but it’s nice to have your own,” he said. “This will make a big difference.”

He also praised the Ziegler team for their support throughout the process. “Everyone I’ve met from the team has been great,” Andrade said. “Dustin kept in touch, checked in and made the whole process easy.”

Bluestone Landscape and Design showcases its work on social media, where you can find them on Instagram and Facebook at @BluestoneLandscapeDesign. As for what’s next, Andrade is feeling grateful and optimistic. “I’m just thankful,” he said. “Thankful to Ziegler, and thankful to everyone who’s supported us. We’re excited for what’s next.”

RJ Landworks, a Minnesota-based environmental contractor, is making a name for itself in wetland restoration and conservation work across the state. The company partners with organizations such as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to create and enhance wildlife habitats on both public and private lands.

RJ Landworks was founded by Riley Slathar, who got his start operating skid steers while helping his father, a custom home builder. That early hands-on experience led to the creation of RJ Landworks, which began with motocross track projects and later shifted to environmental work like wetland restoration and solar field development across western and central Minnesota.

“A lot of our work is out in the middle of cornfields,” Slathar said. “We’re either building new wetlands or improving existing ones to support wildlife.”

For its environmental and habitat work, RJ Landworks focuses on restoring or enhancing areas back to their original state. On larger sites, the team often removes thousands of feet of drain tile to help the land retain more water—an important factor for mating ducks. Using historical imagery and soil samples, they locate natural depressions in the earth and excavate sediment to restore them. These shallow basins are especially valuable in spring, when they are filled with water and become a vital food source for waterfowl.

The company’s daily operations begin with equipment checks and site calibration using GPS technology. RJ Landworks recently adopted GPS systems to improve efficiency and accuracy on job sites. Earthmoving is a major part of the work, with projects often requiring the relocation of 10,000 to 15,000 cubic yards of material.

RJ Landworks operates a fleet that includes a Cat 265, Cat 272, Cat 330 and various Caterpillar skid steer attachments. The company plans to expand its fleet in the next two years with the addition of a D6T dozer to better handle the demands of wetland restoration.

Ziegler CAT plays a key role in supporting RJ Landworks’ operations. The company rents a wide range of Caterpillar equipment and attachments through Ziegler, including specialized tools like forestry mulchers and scrapers. This flexibility allows RJ Landworks to take on diverse projects without the need for large capital investments.

“Ziegler has been awesome,” Slathar said. “Whatever we need, they help us find it. Whether it’s a big machine or a specialized attachment, they’ve got us covered.”

Slathar credits Corey Knuppel of Ziegler CAT for providing reliable support. Knuppel assists with rentals, sales and service, ensuring that RJ Landworks experiences minimal downtime.

“If a machine needs repair, Corey makes sure we’re never without one,” Slathar said. “He’s always quick to respond.”

One example of Ziegler’s service came during a pool demolition project at an apartment complex. When a rented jackhammer lost its charge, Ziegler dispatched a service technician the next morning to resolve the issue and keep the project on schedule.

Spring and fall are the company’s busiest seasons, with projects ramping up as soon as road restrictions lift and the ground dries. RJ Landworks is typically booked out for the year, transitioning from winter snow removal to dirt work as weather permits.

“By August, we’re in a groove,” Slathar said. “It’s still busy, but we can focus on maintenance and keep everything running smoothly.”

With a strong focus on conservation and a reliable partnership with Ziegler CAT, RJ Landworks continues to grow as a trusted name in environmental restoration across Minnesota.

The 1920s were a decade of economic growth and industrial expansion, but by the end of the decade, the United States faced a historic economic collapse. The Great Depression, beginning in 1929, brought widespread unemployment, halted industrial projects, and created uncertainty for businesses nationwide. For Wm. H. Ziegler Co., this was a defining era that tested its resilience and commitment to its customers.

Early Expansion and Preparing for Uncertainty

In the years leading up to the Great Depression, Ziegler CAT steadily expanded its reach across Minnesota and beyond. William H. Ziegler’s philosophy of maintaining robust inventories and focusing on customer support proved prescient as these practices allowed the company to navigate the sudden economic downturn with greater stability. By the late 1920s, Ziegler had also begun to consolidate smaller Caterpillar dealerships in the region, ensuring a stronger market presence.

Adapting to the Great Depression

When the stock market crashed in 1929, the construction and agriculture industries—two key markets for Ziegler—were hit particularly hard. Projects were delayed or canceled altogether, and many customers struggled to make payments on equipment purchases. Understanding the challenges his customers faced, Ziegler adapted by offering flexible payment plans and creative financing solutions to keep businesses operational.

One significant advantage for the company during this time was its partnership with Caterpillar, which was already becoming a leader in heavy equipment manufacturing. Caterpillar machinery, known for its durability and efficiency, became indispensable for public works projects, such as those funded by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Ziegler CAT supplied equipment for projects like roads, bridges, and other infrastructure improvements, which were vital for economic recovery.

Building Relationships During Hardship

While the Great Depression was a time of financial strain, it also provided an opportunity for Wm. H. Ziegler Co. to deepen its relationships with its customers. Ziegler CAT’s employees often went above and beyond to ensure their clients received the support they needed, whether it was through repairs, parts delivery, or personalized service. The company became known as a reliable partner during a period when trust and dependability were in short supply.

Key Projects and Achievements

One of the highlights of this decade was Ziegler CAT’s involvement in federally funded infrastructure projects. These public works programs not only provided employment for thousands of Americans but also relied heavily on machinery to complete large-scale projects. Ziegler CAT’s Caterpillar tractors and earthmoving equipment were instrumental in the construction of landmarks like the Como Park Zoo in St. Paul and the Split Rock Bridge in

Pipestone County. These projects helped establish Ziegler CAT’s reputation as a trusted equipment provider for large-scale endeavors.

Emerging Stronger

By the time the Great Depression began to ease in the early 1930s, Ziegler CAT had emerged as a stronger, more resilient company. Its ability to adapt to challenging economic conditions, maintain strong customer relationships, and contribute to critical public projects underscored its value as a leader in the heavy equipment industry.

For William Ziegler, this era reaffirmed the importance of his founding principles: providing the best service and building enduring customer partnerships. These values not only sustained the company during difficult times but also positioned it for future growth as the nation began its recovery.

If you’re moving dirt, rock, or aggregate every day, you know how important it is to get your load right the first time. Overload a truck and you’re risking damage, safety violations, or wasted fuel. Underload, and you’re leaving productivity (and profit) on the table. That’s where Cat® Payload with Assist technology comes in.

Available on select Cat Next Gen Wheel Loaders, Payload with Assist is an onboard system that helps operators load faster, more accurately, and with less guesswork. At Ziegler CAT, we’re seeing customers use this technology to move more material, reduce rework, and keep projects on schedule.

How It Works

Payload with Assist uses integrated sensors and in-cab displays to weigh material as you work. As the operator lifts the bucket, the system calculates payload weight in real-time. No need to stop and guess, and no more running to the scale house after every pass.

With features like Auto Tip-Off, operators can hit exact target weights when loading trucks—even on uneven terrain or when working fast.

Why It Matters for Your Business

Fewer Trips, More Tons: When your operators can load trucks to capacity without going over, you’re reducing cycles and boosting tons-per-hour. That means more material moved with less fuel and wear.

Real-Time Production Tracking: Payload lets you monitor how much each machine is moving—ideal for job costing or tracking production goals. Pair it with Cat Productivity or VisionLink® for even more insight.

Consistency Across Operators: Even if your team includes new operators, Payload with Assist helps everyone get accurate loads without relying on feel alone. That means more consistent performance, fewer corrections, and less training time.

Cut Fuel Waste and Idle Time: Fewer passes and less rework saves time and fuel. Over the course of a season, those savings add up fast.

See It in Action

Cat Payload with Assist is available on select Cat Wheel Loaders, including models like the 980 XE, 966, and others in the Next Gen lineup.

If you’re looking to get more from your fleet—and your operators—this is technology worth trying.

Talk to your Ziegler CAT representative to schedule a demo and see how Cat Payload with Assist can help your crew load smarter, safer, and faster.

Operating a mini excavator, especially in confined or complex environments, demands precision, control, and a keen focus on safety. Whether you’re trenching, grading, or navigating around obstacles, the challenges can be significant. To address these, Caterpillar has introduced the Ease of Use (EOU) technology suite in its Next Generation Mini Excavators, including models like the 306 CR, 308 CR, and 309 CR. These innovative features—Indicate, E-Fence, Swing Assist, and Bucket Assist—are designed to streamline operations, enhance productivity, and bolster safety. Let’s explore how each component can transform your work experience.

What is Ease of Use Technology?

Cat’s Ease of Use (EOU) suite comprises intuitive tools that simplify mini excavator operations, catering to both seasoned professionals and newcomers. Available on select Next Gen models and as upgrade kits for existing machines, EOU focuses on making daily tasks more efficient and less stressful.

Key Features:

  • Indicate: Provides real-time guidance for precise digging.
  • E-Fence: Sets movement boundaries to avoid hazards.
  • Swing Assist: Automates swing stops for repetitive tasks.
  • Bucket Assist: Maintains consistent bucket angles during operations.

Indicate: Your Guide to Precise Grading

Achieving exact depths and slopes is crucial for tasks like drainage installation or foundation work. Indicate simplifies this by offering real-time feedback directly on the in-cab monitor. Operators can set target parameters, and Indicate provides visual and audible cues to ensure accuracy, reducing the need for manual measurements and increasing efficiency.

E-Fence: Ensuring Safe Operations Within Set Boundaries

Working near obstacles such as underground utilities, overhead power lines, or adjacent structures requires heightened caution. E-Fence allows operators to define movement limits—depth, height, wall, or swing boundaries—through the touchscreen monitor. Once established, the excavator automatically restricts motion beyond these set points, preventing accidental contact and enhancing job site safety.

Swing Assist: Streamlining Repetitive Movements

Repetitive tasks like truck loading or trenching involve consistent swing motions, which can lead to operator fatigue and inconsistencies. Swing Assist enables operators to set predefined swing angles. The excavator then automatically decelerates and stops at these points, ensuring precision, reducing fuel consumption, and improving cycle times.

Bucket Assist: Maintaining Optimal Bucket Angles

Consistency in bucket angle is vital for tasks such as leveling or fine grading. Bucket Assist allows operators to set a desired bucket angle, which the system maintains throughout the operation. This feature ensures uniform cuts and reduces the need for constant manual adjustments, leading to higher quality work with less effort.

Real-World Applications and Benefits

Enhanced Productivity: Features like Indicate and Swing Assist minimize downtime and manual corrections, leading to faster project completion.

Improved Accuracy: Operators can achieve precise specifications consistently, reducing the likelihood of rework.

Increased Safety: E-Fence provides a safeguard against potential hazards, offering peace of mind in complex environments.

Simplified Training: EOU technology shortens the learning curve for new operators, making it easier to achieve proficiency.

Availability and Upgrades

The Ease of Use technology suite is standard on select Next Gen Mini Excavators, including the 306 CR, 308 CR, and 309 CR models. For existing equipment owners, these features can be retrofitted through upgrade kits available at Cat dealerships, allowing you to enhance your current machinery with the latest technology.

Experience Ease of Use Technology Firsthand

To fully appreciate the advantages of Cat’s Ease of Use technology, consider scheduling a hands-on demonstration. Contact your sales representative or local Ziegler location to explore how these features can revolutionize your operations and elevate your job site efficiency.

Cat’s commitment to integrating advanced technology into their equipment underscores a dedication to improving user experience, safety, and productivity. By adopting Ease of Use features, operators can tackle challenging tasks with greater confidence and precision, setting new standards in the mini excavator industry.

Selecting the right Cat® hydraulic excavator is a critical decision that can impact the efficiency, productivity, and cost-effectiveness of your operations. With multiple models available, choosing the best excavator for your business depends on several key factors, including job requirements, operating environment, and long-term investment considerations. Whether you’re working in construction, landscaping, roadwork, trenching, or material handling, here’s a guide to help you make an informed choice.

Assessing Your Project Needs

Before selecting an excavator, consider the specific demands of your business:

  • Type of Work: Are you focusing on general construction, landscaping, roadwork, trenching, demolition, or material handling?
  • Job Site Conditions: Are you working in confined spaces, urban environments, open fields, or rugged terrain?
  • Digging Depth and Reach: How deep and far do you need the machine to excavate?

For landscapers, smaller excavators with enhanced maneuverability and precision are often preferred for grading, planting, and irrigation work, while larger models may be useful for site preparation and clearing.

Understanding Excavator Size Categories

Cat excavators come in different sizes, each designed for specific applications:

  • Mini Excavators (1-10 tons): Ideal for tight job sites, landscaping, residential construction, and light utility work. Compact yet powerful, these machines offer excellent maneuverability, making them perfect for grading, digging trenches for irrigation, and tree planting.
  • Small Excavators (11-18 tons): A step up in size, these excavators provide more power while maintaining versatility for urban construction, site preparation, and larger-scale landscaping projects.
  • Medium Excavators (20-35 tons): Designed for general construction, trenching, and excavation, these machines offer a balance between size and power, often used in larger land development projects.
  • Large Excavators (36-90 tons): Built for heavy-duty applications, such as large-scale infrastructure projects, mining, and deep excavation.

Choosing the right size ensures efficiency and prevents over- or under-utilization of the machine.

Key Excavator Specifications to Consider

When comparing models, evaluate these key specifications:

  • Operating Weight: Determines the stability and lifting capacity of the excavator.
  • Engine Power: Higher horsepower provides greater efficiency and performance in demanding conditions.
  • Hydraulic Flow: Affects the ability to operate attachments effectively.
  • Bucket Capacity: Impacts the amount of material moved per cycle, influencing productivity.

For landscaping applications, lighter weight machines with smooth operation and minimal ground disturbance can help protect delicate terrain.

Matching Attachments to Your Work

The right Cat attachments can enhance the versatility of your excavator. Consider:

  • Buckets: Standard, heavy-duty, or grading buckets for excavation, soil movement, and landscape contouring.
  • Hammers: For breaking concrete and rock in demolition projects.
  • Grapples: Useful for material sorting, forestry, and clearing debris.
  • Thumbs: Improve precision when handling irregular objects, rocks, and logs.
  • Mulchers & Brush Cutters: Perfect for landscaping and site clearing applications, helping remove overgrowth efficiently.

Choosing an excavator that supports multiple attachments can maximize your investment, especially for landscapers who require versatility for a variety of tasks.

Considering Operating Costs and Efficiency

A well-chosen excavator isn’t just about capability—it’s also about cost efficiency. Key factors include:

  • Fuel Consumption: Newer Cat excavators offer advanced fuel-efficient engines to reduce costs.
  • Maintenance & Serviceability: Models with easily accessible service points help minimize downtime.
  • Technology Integration: Many Cat excavators come with Cat® Grade Control, VisionLink® telematics, and other smart features to improve precision and operational efficiency.

Consulting with Ziegler CAT Experts

Choosing the right excavator is a significant investment, and expert guidance can make the decision easier. Ziegler CAT provides hands-on assistance to help you compare models, explore financing options, and ensure you select an excavator that aligns with your business needs.

In the autumn of 1914, against the backdrop of a rapidly changing industrial landscape, William H. Ziegler founded Wm. H. Ziegler Co., Inc. in Minneapolis, Minnesota. With a modest eighty-square-foot office as his base of operations, Ziegler embarked on a mission that would define the company for generations to come: to revolutionize the heavy equipment industry by prioritizing customer service, innovation, and reliability.

A Vision for Excellence

William Ziegler came to the venture with a wealth of experience. Having worked for six years with the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company and another nine years at the Peteler Car Company, Ziegler understood the complexities of machinery and logistics. He also recognized inefficiencies in the prevailing business model, where manufacturers sold equipment directly to customers without maintaining inventories or offering after-sales support. This created significant delays, limited parts availability, and a glaring absence of service options for buyers.

Driven by a desire to solve these problems, Ziegler established one of the first businesses in the area to stock heavy machinery, maintain an inventory of essential parts, and offer comprehensive service. His motto, “Sell the best equipment, provide the best service,” became a guiding principle for the fledgling company.

Challenges and Early Success

Ziegler’s timing was both fortuitous and challenging. The onset of World War I in 1914 increased demand for heavy equipment as the nation ramped up production for military and industrial needs. However, supply chain disruptions and economic uncertainty made it difficult for businesses to thrive. Despite these obstacles, Ziegler’s commitment to quality and service allowed his company to succeed where others faltered.

The company’s reputation grew quickly as it provided reliable machinery and consistent support to industries vital to the war effort, including construction and transportation. By the end of the decade, Wm. H. Ziegler Co. had established itself as a trusted name in the region, setting the stage for expansion and diversification in the years to follow.

Building a Legacy

Beyond his business acumen, William Ziegler’s leadership style and values left an indelible mark on the company. His insistence on maintaining high standards, fostering strong relationships with clients, and addressing customer needs promptly laid the foundation for what would become one of the most successful heavy equipment dealerships in the United States.

By 1923, as the company approached its tenth anniversary, Wm. H. Ziegler Co. had not only survived its early years but thrived in a competitive market. Its success was a testament to the foresight, determination, and customer-first philosophy of its founder.
